“Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Little Jack Horner,” and “Jack the Giant Killer” are all famous tales and rhymes featuring the same hero, a character who often appears in legends, fairy tales, and nursery rhymes. Unlike moralizing fairy tale heroes, however, Jack is typically depicted as foolish or lazy, though he often emerges triumphant through cleverness and tricks. With their roots traced back to England, Jack tales are an important oral tradition in Appalachian folklore. It was in his Appalachian upbringing that Kevin D. Cordi was first introduced to Jack through oral storytelling traditions. Cordi’s love of storytelling eventually led him down a career path as a professional storyteller, touring the US for the past twenty-seven years. In addition to his work as a storyteller, Cordi worked a second job in an unrelated field—a high school teacher—and for many years, he kept his two lives separate. Everything changed when Cordi began telling stories in the classroom and realized he was connecting with his students in ways he had not previously. Cordi concluded that storytelling, storymaking, and drama can be used as systems of learning instead of as just entertainment. In You Don’t Know Jack: A Storyteller Goes to School, Cordi describes the process of integrating storytelling into his classroom. Using autoethnographic writing, he reflects upon the use of storytelling and storymaking in order to promote inquiry and learning. He argues that engaging with the stories of others, discovering that one voice or identity should not be valued over the other, and listening, especially listening to stories of difference, are of utmost importance to education and growth.

Doctors can't diagnose her son. Until she finds one that follows his heart for the answer. Born in a small town in Arkansas, Stacey Bailey never dreams of falling in love with big, New York newscaster Larry Keenan. When their son Jet is born, they learn quickly that he isn’t a cookie-cutter child. Suddenly, Larry begins working odd hours and there is palpable detachment in the marriage. When Larry is killed covering a dangerous news story, Stacey is left to raise Jet alone. After visiting various doctors, Stacey realizes that there is no clear answer as to why Jet has specific medical issues. While he responds in a way that points to Autism, his other responses are inconsistent with the predisposition. Doctors are stumped, yet Stacey is left dealing with a child who can’t lead a normal life, which means that she can’t, either. Jack, a colleague who once idolized Larry, is hungry for a story…and much more. With a type A personality, there are no lengths that Jack won’t reach to garner more time in front of the camera. By stalking Stacey, Jack strives to probe into Jet’s unnatural and, in his mind, newsworthy qualities. It seems Jack is looking to be Larry’s replacement by exploiting his only surviving son. A family emergency forces Stacey to return to Arkansas. There is a small comfort in leaving her troubles in the Big Apple, until she realizes that one has followed her. When Jet’s problems worsen, it leads to a tailspin of angst in the hospital. Days later, following tragedy in the town, Dr. Baker helps uncover the route of Jet’s problems. Unknown sources witness the discovery, and suddenly the world becomes aware of the boy from Arkansas who has an ability that nobody else on Earth has. A unique, never-done-before story that will warm your heart and make you believe in miracles and magic. With a cross between ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’, Knowing will have you laughing, crying, and rooting for the main characters. This is the perfect complement to She Only Speaks to Butterflies, but the books in this series can be enjoyed in any order. Pick up your copy today!

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Kevin Hearne creates the ultimate Atticus O’Sullivan adventure in the grand finale of the New York Times bestselling Iron Druid Chronicles: an epic battle royale against the Norse gods of Asgard. Unchained from fate, the Norse gods Loki and Hel are ready to unleash Ragnarok, a.k.a. the Apocalypse, upon the earth. They’ve made allies on the darker side of many pantheons, and there’s a globe-spanning battle brewing that ancient Druid Atticus O’Sullivan will be hard-pressed to survive, much less win. Granuaile MacTiernan must join immortals Sun Wukong and Erlang Shen in a fight against the Yama Kings in Taiwan, but she discovers that the stakes are much higher than she thought. Meanwhile, Archdruid Owen Kennedy must put out both literal and metaphorical fires from Bavaria to Peru to keep the world safe for his apprentices and the future of Druidry. And Atticus recruits the aid of a tyromancer, an Indian witch, and a trickster god in hopes that they’ll give him just enough leverage to both save Gaia and see another sunrise. There is a hound named Oberon who deserves a snack, after all. Praise for Scourged “[Kevin] Hearne draws his Iron Druid Chronicles to a pitch-perfect close in this dizzy, world-hopping adventure. But amidst the battles and bargaining that goes into saving the world, there is also an enormous amount of heart.”—RT Book Reviews

The oldest fairy stories constitute a fascinating introduction to the book of modern science, curiously predicting its discoveries, its uncovering of the resources of the earth and air, its growing control of the tremendous forces which work in earth and air. And it is significant that the recent progress of science is steadily toward what our ancestors would have considered fairy land; for in all the imaginings of the childhood of the race there was nothing more marvellous or more audaciously improbable than the transmission of the accents and modulations of familiar voices through long distances, and the power of communication across leagues of sea without mechanical connections of any kind. The myths record the earliest attempt at an explanation of the world and its life; the fairy tale records the free and joyful play of the imagination, opening doors through hard conditions to the spirit, which craves power, freedom, happiness; righting wrongs and redressing injuries; defeating base designs; rewarding patience and virtue; crowning true love with happiness; placing the powers of darkness under control of man and making their ministers his servants. In the fairy story, men are not set entirely free from their limitations, but, by the aid of fairies, genii, giants and demons, they are put in command of unusual powers and make themselves masters of the forces of nature.
