Western thought traditionally divides the human being into a body-mind dualism; the first examines the physical body and the second focuses upon psychological and social aspects of aging. Christopher A. Faircloth's edited volume of original pieces attempts to bridge this rift: reinserting the physical back into gerontology's study of aging. Faircloth organizes this text around everyday experience and the social and personal impact of its imagery, while concentrating on three areas of substantive concern: medicalization, gender/sexuality, and the body as consumer.
Life After the Line

Authors: Josie Kearns

Type: BOOK - Published: 1990 - Publisher: Wayne State University Press

As one sixty-year-old, thirty-and-out auto worker said, "My people came from Scotland, and they worked in the mines and we thought black lung was the worst. We came over here for a better life and work in the factories and now [GM] closes them down the same way." This is just one of the quotes Josie Kearns shares in her stories of thirty laid-off auto workers and their families. While some of the stories are heart-wrenching, the volume is not one of gloom and despair. Like Studs Terkel and his Working, Kearns gives special attention to he workers' aspirations, philosophies, and humor. For those who went through retraining programs or put their entrepreneurial spirit to work after their layoffs, Kearns discovers unlikely success stories and describes the dramatic changes workers realized upon entering new fields or becoming their own bosses. She precedes each interview with a brief biographical sketch and also looks at the effects of retirement and retraining on the former auto workers.

Type: BOOK - Published: 2013-11-11 - Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media

Questions concerning the notion of quality of life, its definition, and its ap plications for purposes of assessment and measurement in social and medical contexts, have been widely discussed in Scandinavia during the last ten years. To a great extent this discussion mirrors the international develop ment in the area. Several methods for the assessment and measurement of quality of life have been borrowed from the UK and the US and then further developed in northern Europe. But there has also been an internal develop ment. This holds in particular for the social arena, where Scandinavia has had a special tradition both in theory and practice. In this volume an attempt is made to illustrate some aspects of the philo sophical, and in general theoretical, discussion concerning quality of life in Scandinavia. In addition, some prominent scholars from other parts of Europe, i. e. , France, the Netherlands, the UK and Italy, have been invited to contribute. The volume is divided into three sections. The first contains philosophical analyses of the general notion of quality of life and proposes a number of different explications. The second section considers various ap plications of the notion of quality of life in health care. The papers serve to disentangle some intellectual and ethical problems that stem from these ap plications. The third section is more practical and focuses on methods of measuring quality of life in medicine and health care.

At a time when people are living into their tenth decade, the longest longitudinal study of human development ever undertaken offers welcome news for old age: our lives evolve in our later years and often become more fulfilling. Among the surprising findings: people who do well in old age did not necessarily do so well in midlife, and vice versa.
